Trees De Mits _ Gekloond Rood
De Mits creates a symbiosis between the red of Japanese culture and the raw power of the Icelandic landscape. Through digital intervention, photographs of Iceland are stripped of their natural colours and reinfused with red drawn from her ever-growing personal archive of objects, materials, and references collected during research residencies in Japan and Iceland.
Red is central to her practice: it stands for the physical, for fire, temperament, and sensual force. It evokes love and danger, life and death and for De Mits, it is equally calming and reassuring. In these landscapes, red takes on a supernatural charge, oscillating between hellfire and delicate blush, between violence and tenderness.
